Chairman’s ramble Aug 2023

Our passion is to create memorable items from the wide range of both native and exotic timbers available in New Zealand, and to share our skills with others such as yourself.

WGW Chairmans Ramble Aug 2023

I always find it interesting to see what different members or groups are making in the workshop.  There is a huge amount of skill and knowledge that we can all learn from each other.  Our monthly display table is always full of surprises and variety of great work.

Our national association (NAW) has the Art of Wood Exhibition competition available to enter in August and September, there are a range of categories to choose from. Not only is the work I see our members do worth entering, but we all keep learning from pushing ourselves in a project or seeing how our work compares to others in NZ.
It is also a great chance to get inspiration for our next projects from seeing what others do.

Please send photos of your work in progress or finished so the club can put in our various media. Send to Ross or Andrew.

Each month on the third Wednesday morning, Keith Lang generously does a demonstration/ tutorial to help members. All are welcome to learn from one of our most experienced club members.

Later in September we will have a Inter -Club competition at our club rooms, a great challenge and social day. Look out for details as this gets confirmed.

Recently we in conjunction with other groups were investigating an upgrade to premises, moving hopefully to a refurbished Founders Building, Hamilton City Council’s decision to reject a plan to turn Founders into an Arts and Crafts Hub was a big disappointment. We will continue to consider other options.

Hamilton Wood Turners and Waikato Guild of Woodworkers have started to investigate a merge of the two organisations. Both clubs will discuss and consider this idea in the next 2 months.

The club has a large quantity of timber for members to use. If you want something for a project, contact Grant.
The guild makes a large number of wig-stands to be used by those going through Cancer treatment, it is a pleasure to be able to help in this way.

If you want timber for wig stand making, ask Rodney who normally has some timber ready for this great charity project.

If you are thinking of a project that we may help you with, then please make contact.
